Old Fish not always bad
Found in pretty bad shape but lovingly restored to a hard firing beauty by Dr. Shivs 20 years ago. Hope I have this sizing app working right. Enjoy!!

Re: Old Fish not always bad
Made by Doon Steel Works in India.
No, I'm not happy to see you, that's my 12cm "Red Rose" in my pocket!
Re: Old Fish not always bad
Thanks. I seem to remember not being able to pin the maker back when I got it. Have many more surfaced? The AKA article it was featured in was sort of trying to tie it to another knife they showed in the article.

Here’s the other knife from the article

Re: Old Fish not always bad
They made a bunch of different models. They aren’t particularly well made or rare. The story was they were made from the scrap metal from sunken ships in the bay. If you’ve seen a lot the story isn’t hard to believe. Here’s a link to some on my website. I have a bunch more now that aren’t on there.

Re: Old Fish not always bad
I don’t know why but I just looked at your site and could only seethe home page which had some Doon gun knives that are still made today. If you could send a link to the fish I would love to see them as I just did an extensive 1 1/2 hour search on many combinations of keywords which brought up 1 handmade Damascus switch and of course the Czech knife that Mikov makes now. 0 photos of brass fish springers.
Oh and there are two India companies that make spring knives. Doon and Doom. Neither make anything that look remotely like these.
I would love more enlightenment and anyone else chiming in would be welcome

Re: Old Fish not always bad
I sent an email with photos to Doon 2 days ago. I’ll share it if I actually get any response.
Re: Old Fish not always bad
Did finally find a couple of these brass fish from India circa 1900’s with similar levers but the quality of the handle art did not compare. Blades very similar.
Re: Old Fish not always bad
Was able to find this photo of a pro ported 19th century India made springer but the blade looks completely rotted (note bent tip looks ready to disintegrate).

Re: Old Fish not always bad
Doon Steel Works was founded in 1952, so there are no early 1900’s pieces. They were never show pieces, just novelty tourist type knives. I think you will find that they haven’t made any automatic knives for many decades. If they still were making them they would be coming out of the woodwork like every other knife being produced around the world. Here’s pics of two catalogs I personally own. They made many different patterns over the years and not all are illustrated in these two catalogs.

Who said early 1900”s.
I know the history of Doon but thanks.
I too have been collecting knives since before TSF days and have never seen this knife before and thought I’d share it.
Then you seem to have a need to say it isn’t rare or valuable. Who asked you. I thought this was supposed to be a fun place. I guess not.

Re: Old Fish not always bad
Sorry, not made in the 1800’s. As old and beat up as you may find them, they were made in 1952 or later.

These forums are about sharing information. Sorry if the truth doesn’t align with what you’d like it to be, but unfortunately there isn’t anything I’ve shared that isn’t 100% true.Shark45 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 12:03 pm Who said early 1900”s.
