how do you form a bolster?

Post by yavcon »

I assume you need a template anvil you beat metal around to forge the curves of a bolster? Or some kind of drill press punch? I looked around for a while both here and delphiforum, but cant find how these are done.
Also, are the spring and backsupport the same thickness as the blade or a hair thicker? Thanks.
I just took apart an older Italian leverlock and if I can buy the lever and parts somewhere, I think I could put something together.

Yavcon. Most people file their bolsters from Nickel Silver. It's pretty soft and very easy to shape. Their are a number of mangelrs/makers who have taken the time to cast stiletto bolsters from the originals. They are available to purchase. You could quite easily file your own bolsters for a leverlock. Visit Bill's online forum at http://forums.delphiforums.com/knife101/start where you can find tonnes of knowledge on this subject.

Almost all factory bolsters are formed with dies on a punch press. Most manglers grind/file them out of solid stock.
