Back burner project
Switched gears and started on a re-scale project that I’ve been putting off for months.
The material is Juma, some kind of man made material.
Works pretty much like wood. This is Golden Dragon Juma, but it’s more dark brown dragon. Raw scale on the right, shaped scale on the left. It’s like layered G10, you really need to profile it to get a cool look.
Also, it’s thermoformable. I put a piece in boiling water and was able to bend/curve it.
Anyway, I’ve made some progress.

Re: Back burner project
I would have sworn that was real snakeskin in polyester resin.
Re: Back burner project
I'm wondering how those scales look when finished. Do they show more detail in their pattern when highly buffed? Me too, wanna see the finished project!
Re: Back burner project
Thanks, I’m gonna try to stay on this one.
This Juma is pretty dark, and the scale effect is not high enough contrast, so I don’t think they’ll “pop” like they would if the scales were a lighter color. I thought it would be more golden brown, but I guess this batch wasn’t.
This knife had the fake vinyl snakeskin print under clear acrylic, so trying to stay with the snakeskin “pimp-knife” theme.

It’s an 11 inch Italian style Chinese OTF (They’re sold on Grindworx under the name Mago).

Re: Back burner project
Wow, that wood! Where did you get that stuff?
Re: Back burner project
It’s a man made synthetic material, so it comes in different patterns and colors. It cuts, drills and sands pretty easily (lots of dust) and seems not fragile. This type has a scale pattern somehow mixed throughout the resin.
I ordered it from Maker Material Supply.

An update…
Can’t improve on the appearance of this piece of golden dragon Juma, it’s just too dark and not enough contrast. The bottom scale edges are what I wanted the whole knife to look like. Still needs some more sanding to get rid of those small scratches.
I bought some ivory Juma at the same time. I have higher hopes for it on another project.
I also reversed the front bolsters so the ears now point in what I think is the correct position. This is the way.

Re: Back burner project
Nice fit and finish!
The ivory looks like the scales on a lizard or the shed skin of a snake. It should make cool knife scales.
Can’t wait to see your next project.

Thanks!
Instead of Italian style flat-top scales with rounded edges, I tried to contour them. A lot more filing and sanding but much better looking. My education continues…
