Reading about blade lock pins on the 101 forum - Pin Question

Post by tedmen »

Bill. Do you need a mill to cut/form the locking pin on the blade ? Or can this be accomplished through deft file work? I don't mean making the pin and then press fitting it.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you and yours.

The pin should be integral to the blade. It's very easy to do. Just cut it out square along with the blade outline and file the 4 corners round. There was one custom maker who swore by press-fitting the pins. That pin gets a pretty rough ride when the knife is opened, and one that is pressed in probably won't last too long before it loosens.
Merry Christmas!

Not to mention that installing a separate locking pin is actually harder than just making the blade with a locking pin on it.

Thanks Bill. I noted that integral pin question advice on the 101 forum. One other question if I may.

Is it possible, [using a micrometer as you progress] to file a nice relief clearance around pivot holes on slip joint liners such that the use of washers aren't needed using only jewellers, escapement and/or needle files including perhaps diamond coated curved rifflers and do a decent job of it.
According to some of the guys on Knifedogs unless you have a $2000 bench mill you should forget about trying to make a decent washerless slipjoint.
I'm inspired by the lovely file work the guy on the Clickspring youtube channel does.

Certainly, you can file a relief in liners. It may not look as nice as milled liners, but it will work just as well. The raised portion doesn't even have to be round-it can be diamond shaped, square, or odd shaped as long as it's there.
That said, knives were made for hundreds of years without washers OR relief cuts.
