Tommie Guns...

Post by Wally J. Corpse »

Greetings, Legion Of Fan-

Here's another Elder Mr. Corpse WWII adventure...
His plane was on patrol in support of Navy fighters that were strafing positions on a Japanese held island when they got the call for a Dumbo hop to retrieve a fighter pilot who had been shot down from ground fire. AS they touched down for rescue, their plane came under fire, and the port engine was hit, causing the propellers to fly off and shred the outboard pylon and wing tip, causing the plane to list precariously. The pilot sent my Dad and two other gunners out onto the wing to try and counterweight the list AS two others rafted to recover the injured fighter pilot. Dad and his mates each had Tommie guns and lots of ammo, AS they were concerned about sappers swimming out to attempt to blow up the plane, which proved to be the case. Dad said that the three of them stopped four sappers by hosing them down with their Tommie guns, churning the sea a bright red froth, with one sapper's explosive detonating close to the plane, almost rocking them offa the wing. Once the fighter pilot was aboard, the PBM pilot was able to get the plane out of range offshore, and after a tense few hours, made contact with a submarine that towed them to their seaplane tender. Once aboard the tender, the fighter pilot's squad leader treated Dad's PBM crew with actual cold beer and steaks. From then on, Dad never went far without his Tommie gun.

I had an Auto ordnance long barrel semi auto carbine with a steel receiver.
It had the gangster type top cocking handle and big windage adjusting rear sight.
And a real Cutts Compensator.
it had a vertical pistol foregrip, and a non detachable shoulder stock.
(you could screw bolt it off, but it left a weird fin / gusset.)
I had one 20 round stick magazine.
The receiver is not cut for side sliding mags and will not accept a drum magazine.

I'd carry a rucksack with 200 rounds of lead, and the tommy-gun carbine to my favorite
strip-mine fishing pond where I would shoot.

That sucker was H E A V Y . . . . . . I hated it.
It was nice to shoot, quiet Ka-Chunk when it fired, easy on ears without earplugs.
Made a big big splash in the water. . . Very accurate. . . . .
But it was too dang Heavy. . . .I didn't have any shoulder sling swivels
so I had to carry it.

I Sold / Traded the Thompson away . . . .I forget for what, either a pump 12 gage, or a 6 shooter.
I like M1 carbines. . . I'm a short guy. . . .
I have a few M1 carbines, one of which is a Universal Enforcer pistol with an 11 inch Barrel.
I rigged a different pistol stock, to save the original Universal stock. I prefer the AR15 pistol grip.
I keep it on a custom Schmeisser MP40 Sling, and have several magazines, 5rd, 15rd and 30rd.
15rd mags are the best. 30rd mags are too heavy and don't hang well, even with the M2 magazine catch.
I put a scope on it now and then. . .
I've developed a technique for wearing the sling, and pushing the gun away from me.
the sling stretches tight, and actually works like a stock.

The carbine round is better than the 45 round out of a long barrel, shoots really flat, hits hard.
I think the practical range is about 150 yards. but I rarely shoot past 50 yards, at Dragonflies,
or I like sinking empty plastic shotgun shells.
My Nephew has a Ruger Mini-14, But I think the 30 carbine is much better. Quieter than 5.56 . . ..
or rather the "crack" and sonic boom is softer.
5.56 might be more violent to soft meat, . . . but 30 carbine will knock over a cinder block brick faster.
(Mind you, I have a Springfield M1A in 7.62. . .so Mini-14's are just dumb. . .
and AR-15 platforms with the tubular upper receiver are such a pain to clean, get dirty so fast. )
My enforcer carbine with Open top receiver has eaten over 5000 rounds and only gets a bore brushing
before it's put away. . .It runs swell. . . dirty as all heck. . .still keeps on chugging away.
I have a custom violin case for it.

If you're in the Navy, and on a boat, or a seaplane. and if the Tommygun is not carried too far.
and used as a bench gun, the weight keeps it on target swell.
and the close range knock-down is fantastic.

But I would not want to hump it like Tom Hanks in "Saving Private Ryan."

My Father was in WWII, along with 3 brothers (my Uncles)
and My Mom's brother in law was a Sargent in the South Pacific / Americal Division.
along with HIS two brothers.
Our Family also has 4 kin that died in Combat in WWII. One as a Medic in the South Pacific.
One as a Paratrooper in France. One as a soldier in North Africa,
And one as a German Messerschmidt Pilot.

I have written down many many of their stories . . . .

I keep eyeballing guns that I will never ever buy. . .

One of them is the Aluminum frame Thompson Pistol.
I picked it up. and it's so much lighter.

and here's the aluminum pistol, you can't mount a stock, and you need a permit for a vertical front grip.
There's a polished aluminum / Nickel version also. . . . .

For those who don't know, Drum mag receivers have special cut grooves.

Greetings, Mr. jerryK25-

Welcome aboard! Nice Tommie Guns input and photos. In the days of yore, whether eye was roofing in, or attending SOF conventions in Las Vegas, I always made it a point to stop in at The Gun Store, wherein anyone could come in and for a small fee, rent to shoot a full auto from their vast collection. On one such occasion, I fired the Tommie Gun, with full stock and horizontal foregrip. The cyclic rate is fairly slow, but the slamming of the heavy bolt back and forth in full auto makes for a distinct challenge to keep rounds on target, unless one is aiming to perforate/decorate the ceiling.
That experience gave me pause to reflect on the respect for mine Sainted Dad, who was able to hit the head of a swimming sapper whilst standing on a moving platform of the PBM-5, rising and falling on the sea. Training and practice, coupled with a survival need was key in his survival.

Mr. Corpse,
Your Dad and the rest of the PBM-5 crew were extremely lucky AS the Japanese did not just lay off and pepper the plane with light or heavy MG fire, or even a few rounds from an Arisaka. Maybe they were short or out of ammo, SO a suicide mission to blow up the plane would provide the cred necessary to honor the Emperor plus die an honorable death. Banzai!

Greetings, Mr. Natcherly-

My Sainted Dad said that whence his PBM-5 had 'landed' and been shot upon, the pilot had motored just past the promontory jut wherein the Jap ground gun emplacement was, and they were also being actively strafed by other USN fighters, helping to cover their Dumbo Hop efforts, hence the conscripted sapper volunteers.

My co-conspirator in a common machine shop was a Viet-Nam sargent. His first tour of duty was a radio operator in Korea in 1966.
He re-upped, and got "crypto-clearance" to radio secrets. So he got special government considerations after his service. His "pay" period lasted beyond his active service. . . So he became a machinist, got a class 3 machinist license to manufacture and trade dealers samples. And was a local "private contractor" gunsmith repairing and servicing mini-guns for the local National Guard Helicopter base. I moved boxes and mopped floors there my 2 years Nt'l Guard.
Because a class 3 manufacturer gets inspected by the BATF twice a year, and I (eventually) co-owned the shop. Our Agent (lady) visited both of us to inspect our gun safes and repair client registry books. So we NEVER NEVER NEVER broke any BATF control rules or laws.

I had an AutoCAD computer in MY basement, He had a 24'' swing Lathe and an old Manual Bridgeport Vertical Mill with after-market digital readout. So the both of us teamed up to build our own client list, and eventually snared Canonsburg's All-Clad / Clad Metals work making dies for pots and pans and kitchen cutlery like BBQ forks, chef's knives and Industrial spoon ladles, and roasting pans.. . Good Money. . .

Thru him, I have either fired or held so many weird full auto weapons. . . we built 22cal and 9mm hand crank gravity well fed gatling guns. . . bought 12 gage shotgun barrel liners or .69 cal black powder barrels and made a breech loading scale model Whitworth cannons in both navy pedestal deck guns or army wheeled carriages.
He passed away 2 years ago of Agent Orange Cancer. I once went into his bedroom (talking to his wife about his estate, I said (your husband) got a big collection) and she showed me some 600 rifles standing on their heels along every wall where there was any space. . .He had 4 Thompsons, one was in a wooden case with police property printing on it.
He never had a select fire AR. . . . he said high caliber select fire is a useless noisemaker without a bipod and heavy barrel.
When he was sick, they removed his pinky Toe. . . So I bought him a 45 cal Cutts Compensator to keep in his opposite pocket as a counter-balance.
I'm glad I made him laugh. . . .

After firing his Thompson several times . . when he was still alive, (and an MP40, and a Mac-11, and a Danish Madsen) . . .
I went out and bought a semi auto Tommie gun Carbine. Which I have for about 3 years, and I only shot maybe less than 1000 rds thru it.

They are great. . . .
But an M1 carbine is "just the right size" for me (just like goldilocks) . . .
No, not the folding stock M1 carbines. . . those are dumb, useless, non-locking side fold stocks, and the underfolders are too loose lock-up.
(I have them both, I have ALL the M1 carbine options . . . .)
I can resize and reload .45 auto, .30 cal Bottleneck Luger, .30 cal Carbine, 7.62 NATO, .35 Remington, .357 Mag, and .222 Remington.
But I think I've lost the desire to do it, I don't go down steps to my basement anymore, My nephews will get all this stuff.

He had an H frame 38special S&W wheel gun long barrel , and he could hit Aspirin pills so far away I couldn't even see them.

My last real firearm was a Walther P22 with laser sight and a Keltec Sound Moderator (legal - not a suppressor).
I most likely wont shoot it much.

Now that I can't walk anymore, can only go to my back porch, I shoot yellow jacket wasps on the Apple or Pear Tree fruit. (on the ground.)
I only shoot a single shot Crosman 1377 pump up bb pistol. with Scope and a plastic suppressor, so the neighbors aren't aware.

I bought a top break CO2 Schofield 177 bb pistol. But it's gonna be a wall hanger.

Greetings, Mr. jerryk25-

Nice to read your fun with guns experiences, however, AS a new guy within these hollowed halls, I recommend that you refrain fromst mentioning anyone by their real name, or AS I do, for the FBI scrutiny, always close your posts with- "just for entertainment purposes only".
At my many forays to The Gun Store, I enjoyed full auto shooting of:, the MP-40, S&W 76, Gustaf Model 45, full and mini UZIs, Mac-10, Mac-11, and the Cadillac of machine guns, the MP-5.
Also, whilst at another Las Vegas gun shop, (no longer in existence) with a much longer indoor range, I shot the BAR, the M1-A1, an M-16, and an AK 47.
These adventures were entirely entertaining unto me, but not so much for my new bride, who preferred to go shopping at the casinos' giftage places, and became somewhat noticeably miffed at getting sunburned during the foray to the Las Vegas Sportsman Club Range during the SOF convention live fire machine gun shoot, wherein a flotilla of a variety of new and old machine guns were live fired at targets including a school bus full of explosives that detonated and covered us all in happy grit. She bitched me out about leaving her side AS I snuck up on, and applied mineself unto Hunter S. Thompson for an autograph, which eye cherish unto this day.
Just goes to show ya', if it ain't something, it's something else.
BTW, I neutralized mine her's displeasure by apparently cheerful purchase of some of her chosen garments, one of which she smirkingly inflicts upon me to this day...

1. new place, new rules. . .will comply. . .name edited out. . . .
2. I'm squeaky clean (mostly) and too old and feeble to commit sins anymore.
3. I'm too polite, never pick internet fights, never troll anyone, avoid religion and politics.
4. I'm not really new. . . .over 10,000 posts on SharperDeals . . I'm just new here on TalkBlade.
. . . . . . I'm pretty worn out. . . this last year was tough. . . i'm getting tired. . .everything hurts. . .
. . . . . . I don't get out at all. . .so I tend to be "familiar" on line. . . . But I'll keep a social armlength here. . . .

My Mrs hated Knives, and guns. . . .Before I discovered SharperDeals online we had a blowup and I stopped
having my "beast" friends (not mis-spelled) visit me on loud motorcycles.
Finding Online fellow knife collectors saved my sanity.

Hunter Thompson . . .cool beans. . . I knew Miss America 1963, Jackie. . .she married a track horse owner. . .
I met a lot of celebrities while working at the horse race track as a teen. . . I have a cool autograph book.
Mercer Ellington, Bill Mazeroski, Carl Hubbell, Chilly Billy Cardille ((late night monster TV host) . . .lots of sports guys. . . .
My older brother really got to meet more of them, he was a "liaison" for visiting celebrities at the track. . .
I spent some time with the real "Tonto". . . he stabled horses at the track.
I once saw the Three Stooges perform live at a pavillion in the center of a Demolition derby.
I took guitar lessons at University of Pittsburgh, got some pointers from Joe Negri. . . Saw a few famous pickers up close. . .
I met Mr. Rogers at our local Library when I was a Board Member.
I remember seeing John F Kennedy when he was running for President, speak at our local courthouse.
When I was real Young, I saw Capt Eddie Rickenbacker at the mall signing autographs for his autobiography.

Most of those people were not into Tommy Guns.
