The usual size the state stocks is about a foot this guy [girl actually] was closer to 9", so probably a "Native"
A real surprise - I was only trying to catch a shiner for the dogs

I tried tying my own. My goal ? To tie a totally original onejustinRsmith wrote:nice al, now i want to start fly fishing again!- great fun.

That's EASY but, tying one that looks like a classic/standard is a whole different matter
I went back to basics and use a spincast rig 90% of the time, for Trout in small streams
The rig I used this time was all discontinued or looong discontinued stuff :
A 90s era Bass ProShops PocketHopper
An 80s era Zebco ProStaff rod
A 60s era Herters Hudson Bay Mark 8 spincast reel

Got to the lake today that was just stocked with trout.....did not get any trout bites, but saw some jumping after flies. I did how ever get 73 bluegills in four hours ( all caught and release) and had a bunch of fun. Wish I had got the trout, but at least it was a good start number wise !!!

I have one good flyrod but use it so seldom I forget which brand
[got it in the 80s and it was way over $100, at that time]
I have one telscoping one that I got to carry on the Bike.
But the tiny streams I like to fish are to overgrown to use one effectively

Brookies taste better when caught on vintage equipment. This is my father's rig which he bought second hand when he returned from the war. Dad turned 90 a little over a year ago and Mother didn't want him going to the woods alone anymore

It ain't WHAT you use, it's HOW you use it
It would be nice to be better with a flyrod but, I'd really like to be as good "hand-casting" as a kid I saw in Colorado
All he used was a spool of mono, a hook and some Salmon eggs and he was doing just fine
p.s. I hate fish so I only fish "catch and release"

The 1st rod I ever used [my Grandfather's] was VERY similar - tubular steel [2 piece telescoping] and the reel was a little narrower. The 1st fish I ever caught, was on it, a "Horn Pout" [Bullhead/Catfish critter] almost 6" long I was about 4 or 5 at the time but, I was "hooked for life"Diggaway wrote:Brookies taste better when caught on vintage equipment. NO-ONE I know of has ever caught another fish of any kind in that tiny stream [actually the run off from a swamp]

I am all for the fly rods! Funnest way for me to fish. Controlling past 20' with one of those with skill is an art. Its like flipping around a balisong
Also those "brookies" are some pretty looking trout. I've always preferred them to rainbow.
