Hello everyone
I hope you can help. I’ve been given the sword in the photos below. I think it’s an 1899 British cavalry sword. The blade length is 83cm. and I think on what I’ve read that’s a bit short. Do you think the sword is genuine. If the blade has been shortened would this affect it’s value and why would it have been cut down?
Any comments would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
John

Draggoon.

I have a book by Wilkinson and Latham somewhere with how these swords were tested and quenched in whale oil.

Let me dig it out and I will try and help you.

In the meantime fine sword ...we will find out what regimentnt EFD is aswell ,could increase its value.
British battle swords were often used and abused and sharpened or reshaped for battle by a rmourers in the field.Value is always affected by change unfortunately ,as people want mint examples...myself I like things that were there not stored in the tower armouries..

Good to meet you
I will write more tommorrow as its late here now in England.

regards

Definitely an 1899 pattern

The EFD is an abbreviation for Enfield,an important armoury in British history.

These swords were used in the Boer war but were not liked so much as the scabbards were heavy and they didnt cut well in some engagements.,one at Battle of Talana Hill when used by the 18th Hussars.
Original length 33.5 inch × 1.5 inches wide
Blade type
Flat back single fuller each side to within 6inches of the point, double ended for last inches.
Guard
Sheet steel , near pommel
sword knot slit
Hilt mounts steel
Grip leather strips riveted through tang
Scabbard sheet steel ,wood lined
Sword weight:2lbs 11oz
Scabbard weight:1lb14oz

Notes :Guard does not have Maltese cross cut into it like preceding patterns.

Hope this helps for now
I really like the sword
