If I can recall correctly, I think he said it was a goalers sword. Can anyone tell me anything about this sword.
This came from my father. It has no markings except the number 9 stamped on it in 3 places.Mystery sword

Re: Mystery sword
Does look like a Cavalry sword but this could be a British Constabulary sword or a customs and excise sword used for thwarting amugglers in the 1840s and later.
I also think the American infantry had shorter swords for captains so worth a look down that avenue aswell.
I am sure it isnt a cavalry sword due to length and more likely one of the above.
Naval hangars were shorter for close quarter combat as you didnt have as much room on deck.
Heres a couple i found like it.

Yes Ian,that looks like it. Mine has no scabbard though. You found pic, but don't know what it is, is that correct? I would definitely think it's too short to be cavalry. Thanks for the input, I'll start with your 1st 2 suggestions as they seem similar to what my father said.
Should you come across any more info, I would love to hear it.
Once again thanks.

Re: Mystery sword
I'd say its a constabulary hangar.
There were yeomanry constabulary set ups as well as the official constabulary .
I think the No 9 is a number allocated to the officer who owned the sword ,it would be hung on a swordrack until needed on his beat, along with a single shot percussion pistol and truncheon etc....all belonged to the government and needed a mark .
I hope that i am right for you ,ive seen these before in England and they are collectable ,the loss of scabbard affects value unfortunately..
Thanks for sharing both knife and sword anyway.
All the best
