Cold weather

Post by Graybeard »

Does the cold affect the release mechanism in these knives? All mine fired good then put them in my gun safe down in basement. It’s not super cold but colder than upstairs. Got them out over weekend to clean and oil and a couple wouldn’t release like before put quick release oil on them helped some but still wouldn’t release all the way every time. Just wondering if the cold weather does this ? Thanks

I would think very cold temps would slow them down. Perhaps the oil got thicker and slowed down their action too?

I think it’s the oil congealing causing this issue. Using the wrong type of oil can dry out and act like a glue instead of a lubricant.

Old age, slowed me down too.

Everything slow down when it's cold. Let them warm up to room temperature and try again. They should be fine.

I've noticed the same thing on a bunch of knives just recently. I had to move my knives to a different location which is colder and dryer than previously. Now a bunch of the knives won't fully open. Quick release oil helps some but not all.

I can relate to that! Seems like all the injuries I had when I was younger have came back to haunt me. Getting old isn't a party but it beats the alternative, or so I've been told.

Besides the old injuries, feebleness allows me to have new ones too.

I've got similar mystery issues. I store knives in the open position in display cases. I go to inspect and oil, but they don't open all of a sudden. What I've found, on more than one, is that the liners have actually "sunken in" (for lack of a better description), where the liners are actually gripping the sides of the blades and not allowing them to release from the closed position. I have to open them up and spread the liners apart from inside the well. Too hot, too cold, too much humidity? I have no explanation. It's almost like the liners are bending in towards each other. I've actually started storing some closed now.

This sounds A LOT like the problem I've been having. I've been having them professionally fixed as I come across the affected knives during inspections. But knives that worked perfectly fine suddenly won't open fully, it's odd.

I had attributed it to different temp/humidity as I had moved storage locations. I'm Wondering now if it had something to do with storing them open versus closed.

🤷

Naturally, my first thought was that the kick spring(s) broke, or the button wasn't lifting the sear pin to release the blade. But, a few taps into the palm of my hand, and the blade would slowly work it's way out. Come to find out, the liners are gripping each side of the blade in the closed position. I know it sounds like maybe the lid of the display cases are forcing down on the knives, but I see that's not happening. There also doesn't appear to be any warping of the scales. I just can't imagine what's causing the liners to sink inwards. I can't imagine average home temperatures or even humidity can bend brass liners inward. It's a mystery to me. And, to think that many of my collection must have sat in "sock drawers", or wherever, for 70+ years and been just fine is amazing
