14" German springer.

Post by ragnir71 »

Hello everybody!
Bought this at a flea market a few days ago. Paid 25 usd for the knife.
Cleaned and oiled the knife and it works great. On the blade it is stamped "Rich Abr Herder Solingen Germany".
Anyone know how old it is? How much could it be worth?

Its a whopper! 8)

Great knife ragnir71 .

I have never seen them this big so I will let someone with a bit more knowledge comment .

I can tell you that 25 USD is a steal for something as impressive as this ,and made by a fine maker aswell .Id say it is 1960s -70s in age

Thanks a lot for sharing it with us .

F. Herder was a large company that made many knives of different patterns for other Solingen makers. I am of the opinion they made most, if not all, of the tab release knives like the Krushke, Klaas, etc. They made many patterns of lever locks, too.
This knife is a great example of their work. It's a display knife.
While it's just an educated guess, I think it's pre-WW2.
I would love to own it!

Ian lol I was only suggesting that Bill might be able to age it and appraise it's value as knowledgeable as he is regarding German lever locks. His name "sprang" to mind at ragnir71's question. I have no knowledge of, nor do I care to know how he's endowed below the belt, so to speak.

Dang! I read " Freidrich Herder!"
Sorry-I now see "Richard." I still think it's pre-war.
The Herder family was prolific in German cutlery. There was Carl, Daniel, Elias, Freidrich, Richard, H.Herder, Otto, Robert, and some others.

Value is way up there, but I would think lower than if it was in the US.

Luke ...sorry knew what you meant .but couldn't resist ..just having a laugh :)

Bill
The condition of this knife is superb aswell. The scales are stunning and the blade is full and sits deep for a 70 year old knife ,probably too big to use ,and as mentioned the centre of some Herder display in a shop window .
There can't be too many of these badboys knocking around ..
It still amazes me here on TB ,you begin to think you may have seen everything ....then something like this appears .
To be honest when I first seen the topic heading I thought that Ragnir had incorrectly typed "inches instead of "cm ".

Ian,
No worries, mate. My offended, stuffy reply was also tongue in cheek.
