11-inch picklocks

Post by Panzerfaust »

The 11-inch picklock is my favorite size for collecting although if I were going to carry a stiletto, I would prefer an 8 or 9 inch. From top: Latama in box, SMCO and Mauro Mario. I haven't been actively collecting in about five years and they seem to have dried up online unless you're willing to pay a lot more than I was the last time I was buying them.

I agree. . .the proportions of an 11 inch look more pleasing to MY eye.
11 inch picklocks are the Iconic 50's knife
and your's are wonderful examples.

Although a 11 inch has "the look"
9 inch is more practical and more stable.'
I've loaned (at work for 60 seconds) an 11 incher to a friend, and they try and cut a box,
and the wreck the back spine, bend it out.
11 inchers have an achilles heel in that the length can overcome the locktab spring..
especially if they try and cut with the tip, and not the blade edge at the tang.

But, I tend to preserve my "good knives" and never see them
and only "play" with lesser knives. . .

My personal favorite ( recently ) is a manual clip point,
old enough for horn scales and Nickel bolsters and fake button.

Very nice knives Panzerfaust. It’s great to see some vintage autos again.

Thanks everyone and my interest in picklocks goes back to about 1979 when my best friend showed me his dad's switchblade which I learned many years later was a Japanese stiletto.

Just my 2c worth.... I don't consider this an "Achilles' heel" or "design flaw" because stilettos were
never intended to cut -- the entire design is engineered for a straight plunge into soft organic tissue.

I don't want to sound nit-picky here; but honestly, It's like saying that a china teacup has a design flaw because
it will break if you use if to scoop mortar all day when you're re-bricking your patio. It simply wasn't designed for it.

Well, I know that, and YOU know that.
but the friend that "borrowed it" and bent the backspine opening a box
did not use a sawing motion and tried to straight drag it thru cardboard.
I only ever used it to slit tape on a box, never actually cut open a box.

Jerry ~ You must have felt like shoving the thing through that guy's eye socket! This is one of the reasons I always carry
a $2 Walmart "throwaway" folder.... so I can beat on it unmercifully; and also in case some bonehead wants to borrow a knife.....

Mike ~ I like 'em too! I notice that the non-locking ones are much harder to find. Have you ever seen an Italian fake-button that doesn't lock?
(This slip-joint Valor was purchased at the flea in July for $10)

That's a good question... Most of the japanese false buttons (like the one you have pictured) are friction folders but I don't know if I have ever seen an Italian that's not a lockback or picklock...
