They are using the standard 1950s picklock. As long as the actors did what the characters were supposed to do (slice not stab) then they probably would have been able to use regular non-prop knives with dulled edges.

I actually think they are using lever locks. Someone showed a close up of them and I was surprised.

Lol, I was thinking about Rebel Without a Cause. I don't think anyone ever figured out for sure what those are in WSS because we never get real good looks at the knives.

Jim the search result seem to all say lever locks. I think they are correct.

Definitely leverlocks I’ve watched those scenes 100 times. I would even venture to guess, a Latama Brevette in one scene.

Now that I can see the shot of one on the ground it is definitely a old German lever. I wonder why they used that type for a gang member character's weapon. I would guess they didn't put much thought into the knives and just used whatever they could find.

I saw the play in New York about 15 years ago and they used stilettos :)

If you are interested there will be the sequel to the west side story film. The knives in the sequel will be by Frank Beltrame, that's all.

Would be great if your family's company got screen credit!! Of course a special run of West Side Story Stilettos would also be a natural.

Romeo and Juliet; it's a timeless story.
