Old Maltese Flat Guard

Post by Quaero »

Old Maltese flat guard models are certainly uncommon and are normally associated with time frames of the late 1800s to early 1900s. I had suspected that they were made a bit later based on appearance and construction, but had no proof until a friend of mine (and the most knowledgeable collector of old Italian switchblades) confirmed it through catalog information that they were indeed produced up through the 1930s. That fact strikes a question as to why more examples haven't surfaced over time. The classic "S" flat guard stiletto models were certainly the most popular, but the Maltese models are every bit as neat looking in my opinion. The model shown is one of the later Maltese examples dating from the late 1920s to 1930s era.

Given their rarity, I have only seen a few either in photos or in person. None come close to being in the condition of yours, Quaero. Thanks for sharing.

Quaero, thanks for posting your very beautiful knife and the associated information. What size is the one pictured ? I'm thinking 28cm ? In how many different sizes were the Maltese produced? Thanks
