Re: Are you seeing this?

The prices are quite high...... compared to ordinary, run-of-the-mill knives. But that's comparing apples to oranges.

The cutlery community has become accustomed to vintage switchblades selling for eight hundred, a thousand, fifteen hundred dollars. "Oh but that's different!
You can't compare ...

Very sobering to hear that we lost Duncan Oldham and then Walter Halucha only a day apart. Made me wonder how many of the 'regulars' here are under 60; and whether this site will be here in ten years.

It's difficult to interest younger people in anything that isn't electronic. And after having ...

Re: Drop-top switchblade

Thanks Tom..... interesting to see that all three models are marked "sold out" ..... I wonder if this means there was high interest in them, or low interest in them?

One of the reasons that I thought my knife was convertible to manual is the nail nick. I find it annoying when a NN blade is ...

Thanks Bill...... now I'm glad that I didn't try to pull out
the spring! Seems like an odd way to make the knife.
The first thought that comes to mind, is that this was
an attempt to circumvent import restrictions?

Drop-top switchblade

This is the first so-called "convertible" stiletto I've had. Although it looks simple enough --- just pry up the tip of the spring, like a Mikov, and lever it out --- I don't want to make a mistake and break something. Is it as easy as it looks?

(Ricasso markings: "Italy" over "stainless ...

CM conversions have been discussed here from time to time; but nobody seems to know much about the company itself -- who founded it, where it was located, who worked there, how long it was in business, whether they turned out any other autos, etc.

Having valuable items on display is simply setting out
a smörgåsbord for burglars. My good stuff is boxed up
and put away. On occasion, I'll dig out a box and rummage through it; and the enjoyment is almost like the first time I ever saw those pieces. "Wow, I totally forgot that I even HAD this ...

Re: Are all sterling silver Schrade doubles marked as sterling?

While I am not an authority on these knives, my experience is that premium / luxury items were very conscious of sterling markings during this era.

Such markings assured customers that extra expense was justified, and they were indeed receiving quality items. They also were a subtle form of ...

The instant I saw the brass work I said to myself, "Definitely modern..... looks like India or Pakistan ".
The scales, eagle, and other design elements are
crudely done; and have a clunky, muddy appearance.
Examination of authentic pieces from this era will

One aspect which has barely been addressed is blade geometry. Bill nodded in that direction when he said "Blades like bayonet grind blades have the bevels ground too steep to ever be really useful for cutting."

And of course the stiletto switchblade was never intended for cutting. It is nothing ...

Tom -- I was surprised at the asking price of $95 for the pair of Japanese versions. Have you seen any actually sell at that level?

Below is a knife that I picked up a few weeks ago at a flea market in Massachusetts for $5. The only identifier is 'Brasil' -- it's tempting to think it may have ...

Occasionally the phrase "odds bodkins!" is heard in a
movie about King Arthur or Shakespeare's era.

Likewise, "gadzooks!" is a related exclamation (that was frequently used in the comic strip, "The Wizard of Id").

Both phrases have similar origins. 'Bodkin' was a term used during the Middle ...
