Some knives used in movies
I don't see an off topic as, while knives in movies
may concern knives - Hollywood often distorts the truth
about them & their capabilites. But for the sake of fun, remember
some of these? -
Szell's ( the late Sir Lawrence Olivier's ) cutter that shot
from his coat sleeve in Marathon man?
Janey ( William Devane's character ) uses a switch in the movie
as well...
Best bet - read the book by William Goldman
( more exciting than the movie, IMO )
Anyone remember other movies that had knives in'em?

In William Goldman's book Marathon man the description
of the cutter depict's it not so much as a large OTF switch
as a gravity knife. With a little engineering imagination it would
be possible to build either.
A Hollywood prop in the movie could be reality.

The off topic is at the bottom of the main page- but of course we have a "switchblades in the movies" thread!
I just mentioned marathon man in there a coupla days ago.

There are such things as "ballistic" knives.... bloody great spring in them that takes a LOT of cocking... needless to say they are illegal just about everywhere... I think they are (were) made in eastern Europe.MegaDave wrote:Well I had a guy tell me that he had a knife that the blade does fly out of the handle...he said it would stick into wood! I said "where can I get one" LOL He was an english guy...

Are you speaking of the SPETSNAZ ballistic knife?
There were two versions : one that had a coil spring that,
when shot from the handle, could imbed itself with five times
the force of a manual stab. By the same token, it's been rendered
contraband ( i.e. ownership is enough to get you arrested )
throughout the State's
The other actually used a blank-fire cartridge the propelled the blade...

Click on Images and enter "Soviet ballistic knife" and you'll get a few "hits" ( sadly, the spring driven version is not there )

Hey Teddy,
I have bid on three of those knives inthe past two months and just missed out on the last one by $234.00. Below is a little information on the blade or should we say rocket.
Take Care
Originally developed for Soviet Spetznaz troops, the ballistic knife is a fighting knife with an added surprise for opponents who "know" that the agent is armed with only a melee weapon. If the agent removes the knife's safety pin (akin to a grenade's pin) and flicks the trigger on one side of the crossguard, a steel spring propels the knife's blade at an initial speed close to that of a crossbow. The knife is wildly inaccurate beyond point-blank pistol range, but can cause serious injury to someone who thinks himself out of the agent's reach.
In melee combat, the ballistic knife functions as a standard knife. Making a ranged attack with a ballistic knife requires Weapon Group Proficiency (Hurled), and allows the agent to make a feint against his target as a free action if the target is unaware of the weapon's true nature. Reassembling a fired ballistic knife requires three full actions.

Did you see a combat knife used in movie? I have my combat knife collections and just asking if combat knife is still in demand in a movie.

Im not sure about combat knives, but in the first punisher, Travolta has a ballistic knife, I wouldnt mind having one if it werent for the fact that I would be arrested immediately for having it. That is if any police ever drove this far out of town
