I have one of those too. My son-in-law gave it to me to facilitate the making of apple pies. Works great!

Never tried one because they always seemed like they would be more trouble than worth. Might have to give one a try.

Try coating the suction cup with a thin film of water. I have a small vice with the same type of suction cup. I flip the handle the suction cup grips the smooth surface. Mine works best with a thin film of water. Otherwise, it pops off the workbench.

If and when I do peal my fruits or vegetables and I’m not at home I like to use a short bladed knife around 3 inches or so. I like to use a clip point or spearpoint.
