Blade Play

Post by jim d, »

Considering the locking mechanism designs of stilettos versus leverlocks, it seems intuitive to me that leverlocks should be much more resistant to developing blade play from repeated firing than stilettos. Is this true?

Absolutely. If you look at the stiletto, there is very little area of the blade supported by the liners when the knife is open.

I've wondered why they never make the butt end of the blade longer for added support and rigidity when opened. If you'll notice, when you're closing the blade there's a good half a centimeter clearance from the butt end of the blade to the locking tab. Extending that as far as possible seems like such an obvious solution to a more sturdy lock up.

Mr. Bastard
The tang can't be lengthened much because it can not hit the backspring. The bolster would need to be wider to accomodate a longer tang, hence the whole knife would have to be re-engineered.
