Tip for novice knife customizers

Post by Straydog 5247 »

Novice Manglers ! ..... I was out inna shed today ( 101 degrees ) workin' on a 13"er , decided to put it together for a "dry run" to see how things fitted together.....She worked perfectly ....then I turned the loose knife over , & the pivot pin fell out , I went to look where it went & the blade ( now loose) dropped out , fell straight down with the point & cutting edge nickin' the top end of the toe ( I was wearin' sandals ) next to the big toe ......kinda "smarted" & bled like I cut it off  ......no major damage , felt kinda stupid , as everyone knows you should wear shoes around "pointy stuff"
So , take a lesson novice customizers....Always wear shoes when buildin' knives , I bet Mr. Bill DeShivs will agree with me on this !

Mr. Doggie, please do not kill my image of you as a Primo knife builder. However you can certainly "Tango" in the knife shop.
Just kidding brother, just leave the flip-flops for watering the garden and wear boots when mangling sharp objects.

I have a special project in mind for you but right now I have another obligation.

Thinking about a Mikov with dark horn and a bail....possibly some file work.
Love those Mikov's.
I have a couple of Bill's works and hope to get something someday by your hands.
You sir are a legend.

That is great...now I don't feel so silly...almost had the same thing happen except I dropped the pin ....went to look for it on the floor and whacked my head against the edge of the bench...Nemo

Very good advice. I learn most of my safety lessons after I injure myself.

I've never done that, but I have had a few Xacto knives roll off the table and stick in my thigh before...ouch.

I also wear eye protection whenever I'm working on guns or knives with springs. The chances of anything happening or slim, but I have had a few compressed springs hit me in the face before. Better safe than sorry!
