D liners?

Can anybody explain that to me, What are D liners?

Older knives had the button pivot on pieces of the liner that were punched inwards in two "D" shapes. There will be 2 cutouts visible inside the button-side liner that look like the letter "D."
Modern knives don't use this arrangement.

What the heck, I will use this picture again for an aid in Bill's explaination: The older ones are the third and fourth from the top and you can see the "D" cuts which are not used in the modern ones at the lower part of the picture:
