Switchblade Key Review

Post by jim d, »

Picked up my new car today (Acura TL) and it came with two switchblade keys. They are a button open/button close design with a s/s button and bottom bolster, which also has a loop to attach to a ring. Keys sit deep and are centered when closed. Keys fire hard with positive lockup and no up/down or side-to -side play. They are straight in the open position with no banana. One thing that is different from all my other switchblades is that at the airport I believe I can get these past TSA - oh yeah - they can also be used to start my car. :D

I forgot to mention that there is no tang stamp, keys are cut but unsharpened, black imitation horn scales, no red dot safety but there is red dot panic button.

My 2002 Turbo Diesel VW also came with two of those. While the button looks like it is stainless, such is not the case. I have worn the chrome off until the copper plating now shows. We will have to wait to see what is revealed after that layer gets buffed off by my thumb activating the key. Other than that, the device works as well as any other coil spring I own...

Congrats on the new car :!:

Sweet, Jim. Can't go wrong with an Acura.
I've got a friend with a 5 series Mercedes that has this weird laser key or something. There's no actual "key" but this......THING that you put by the door lock and it kind of gets sucked in and "read" by the car. Then the door unlocks. It's some type of anti-theft thing I guess.
All I know is that if you lose it, it costs $3,500.00 to replace it!!
I think you're far better off with the Acura, Jim. Nice car.
Congrats!!

Bob,

WOW - that is amazing. I didn't think it would get any more ridiculous than the time I had a legal size tube of toothpaste confisgated because it wasn't in a plastic bag. I asked, so toothpaste + plastic bag is legal but toothpaste - plastic bag is illegal. The response was "yes"

Thanks for sharing that link. Fortunately I usually don't drive to the airport so I shouldn't have to worry. Come to think of it, after reading that piece, I won't drive to the airport at all.
