Got a New Fish
I had been talking with Pat Havlin earlier this year. This can be a dangerous thing to do, kind of like hanging out in a pastry shop when you are on a diet. We both mentioned that the fish style was one of our favorites. Well, that started the whole thing off. Many emails and calls were exchanged to determine the parameters and specifications of this project. We decided on a 15" version with Damascus blade. Any larger size would most likely mean a split scale as good horn is now hard to find in larger sizes. Besides, I really don't like split scales.
This is what the bill of materials finally looked like:
Blade and Backspring: 1/4" Mike Norris Gator Skin Damascus
Bolsters: Chad Nichols 3 Tone Scramble Pattern Mokume
Scales: Select Brazilian Horn from Lucio Di Bon
Liners: 3/32" Brass
Kickspring: O-1 dovetailed
Pat then applied his magic and put all this together. It was not an easy build. As he later wrote to me, "It was a fun project despite the elaborate heat treatment process. Something (like) a cross between regimented metallurgy and alchemy."
I am simply blown away by how well this turned out. If we were in Japan, Pat would be declared a Living National Treasure. Here are some pictures of the result of his fine work.
First of all there is this video. Turn up the sound!. The lock up is pure music...

That's a stunning blade .
I love the colour of the bolsters and dark grey of the damascus ,it goes beautifully together.
I wish I could catch a fish like that this side of the pond.
Thanks for the great pics of a piece of art.
Regards
Ian

Totally stunning, Dave. You've got culture and class just to request such a beast.
