Just finnished... for now

Postby Purecustom on Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:07 pm

Alright so I just recently got this 9 inch AKC swingaurd and had a big problem with how horribly then scales fit the knife.. so i did something about it. this is my first attempt at modifying a knife so all constructive criticism and tips are helpful for my next build! Got some exotic burl from a wood store here in Toronto and went to town, Big thanks to bill and javacupper for all the tips and tricks!

these are my "mock 1" scales i was not please with at all so i decided not to use.

this is where i sit now with the knife. im not too pleased with some fitment and some other little things but i like it.

my little attempt at file-work

this was all done by hand, the only machine i used was my mill for the inside of the front scale for the relise mechanism and my band saw and bench belt sander for rough shaping, so any little tips or tricks anyone may know of to help me for next time is more then welcome! I think i may do more work to the bolster, change the button, guard ect.. next time but i think this piece is a good first knife work example

Very good first attempt.
Next time be careful not to round the edges of the scales. You need more than one fastener on the button side scale.

Thanks for the kind words!

the reason for the one screw on the bottom is because when i found the bolsters were a machine pressed piece and not cast like i believed i simply left spare material on the top of the front scale and slid it under the bolster then locked the rear of the scale down, i think it worked fairly well and made for a clean look, maybe on the next i will remove the bottom bolster and leave material there to lock it down so theirs no bolts or pins at all!

just a thought!

If you do it precisely, your idea will work fine.

Was thinking along the same lines to eliminate some pins.
The idea i had was to leave the scales a bit longer and create a small tail that would slip under the rear bolsters and held together with one pin. Trying to figure out how i will do the top bolster without interfering with the push button mechanism.
This would of course, need to be a picklock as the top bolsters would not be able to swivel.

Thanks for all the input guys!

That's about exactly what I did with the lip on the front scale at the top and slid it under the bolster, I dident do it lightly tho, with a wood like burl with no constant grain it worry's me about the humidity and temperature changes warping
and misshaping causing the scale to lift off the handle and brake, I knew with only doing this on the top and bolting it down on the bottom it would hold the scale down and keep it from warping and braking, I still had the minor issue of
the tab I left under the bolster snapping, so I had to very carefully drill small holes trough the tab and into the scale to keep it somewhat ridged. I believed it worked out just fine for a display knife but I'm still concerned about it... But to be
Completely honest the only reason I did all this to begin with is because I only had just enough of this burl to do one set of scales (and I do mean JUST enough) and I liked the scales so much that I did not want to ruin it or split it by peening
It incorrectly.. so in short I'm happy it worked out but I defiantly wouldn't recommend it to an experienced builder or anyone who would have another choice. Yes it worked and yes it will probably hold but it defiantly wouldn't hold to a heavy or moderate
Use knife. You just have to have something physically holding the scales down!!! Although a must say I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong!
