Looking for info about a knife

Post by Claudester »

I met an old timer ( a little older than me :D ) that knew I collected knives and asked me if I could identify a knife his
wife had bought him. He sent me the picture and a sketch of the stamp on the tang but I had no clue of the maker
and after doing a week of searching, came up with nothing. Here are pictures of both.
Thanks for any help

Thanks Terry,
Life is still good. Every once and a while I still go on a knife kick like yesterday. I opened a bunch of boxes and
started fondling some blades. I had forgotten that I had a lot of them. I really don't know if the knife in question is
a custom high quality blade or a piece of scrap. It's just that I told this man I'd look around to see what I could find out
and can't find any thing. At least I tried.

Hi Steve, welcome back. :D
No clue on the knife, but if I was to guess, I would think Ka-Bar because of the stamp.
Looks similar to KA.

I know almost nothing about knives, but this could be someones personal tang stamp. A home made knife, someone's initials and the number 5 could be the knife makers lucky number or the 5th knife of that style. :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
In any event it's a good looking knife.

I have gotten some replies but no one knows what it is yet. A few asked for a close up of the tang stamp. Can you do that?

Sorry, I don't have the knife and the gentleman lives across country from me. I will ask him if he
can do a close up.

Well, I found the maker of the knife and verified it by sending him a picture of the knife. His name is Ken Steigerwalt and he is quite the knife maker. Here is a copy of the email he sent me.

Hi Steve,
Sorry for delay. I did make this knife back in the mid 1990's. The scrimshaw was done by my dad.
I hope this helps,
Ken

Here's a link to some of his work.
