An auto 22 has too many issues that can go wrong.

I had a Browning that fired flawlessly but I recall at least once or twice a shell not ejecting properly but was an instant fix.

The more I think on the subject I am not sure I want a 22 for her.
One reason is if she fired a 22 and then fired a 38 the bigger bang may be a shock and turn her against it.
She has fired my 45 but this was years ago. My Sig has a 4.5in barrel and is lighter that an all steel frame/slide 1911 with a 5in barrel so it tends to buck a tiny bit more.

I love my Sig P220 but a 1911 is my all time favorite firearm.
If you go with the .38, start her out on some cowboy loads before you move her up to plus P loads, the speer 135 gr JHP have a pretty good snap to them!

I was taught to start new shooters on .45acp as it's low pressure but has a large bit of recoil, then move to 9mm as it's common and still a bit snappy, then move to whatever you want.

It you start big and then get smaller the shooter has a larger/more powerful benchmark to judge by, .22 is only good if you are trying to drill the absolute most basic of concepts like not flinching when shooting or proper trigger pull (which I think a slide-mounted red dot fixes perfectly, but thats a different story). I still would go .45 -> 9mm -> .22

As a side note, the first gun I ever fired was a a 1928 Thomson .45acp SMG. At an age of 9 years old it was a pretty bad idea on my fathers part. The gun was way too heavy and long for me at the time and the recoil is soft but constant, the muzzle rise made things VERY difficult. He then also the same day had me a shoot a WW2 98k rifle (which is pretty stout especially with surplus hotloads) However, I am now a great shot with most rifles and especially pistols, I have no issue with the recoil from even the average Nagant or 8mm Mauser rifle. I have a semi-auto 7.62x54r rifle that I routinely practice double and triple shot "volleys" with at the range, no issue. I think I owe this in part to the fact that I was started on some of the biggest most intimidating guns first and then, moved down / grew into, everything else from there. I will however say that 2 rifles I still do not enjoy shooting much would have to be a Chinese Type 53 and a Winchester 94 Trapper in .30-30, for both these guns the combination of powerful/high pressure cartridges, plus light weight rifles, plus (most importantly) tight bores can make them quite unpleasant to shoot after a few rounds or so.

Interesting list. I also read where Kentucky ranks at #40 in crime rate and your chances of being involved in a violent crime is 3.9%
That's pretty darn good if you ask me....so I'd say well armed citizens have a heck of a lot to do with low crime.

Pete I do believe there are states much more "gun friendly" but this list I posted was gun owners per capita.
DC came in last and look at the crime rate as well as Illinois,California etc.

Thing is most gun owners have more than one and in many cases 20,50 100 ...

What new law are they talking about in Georgia?

Mr. Dark I personally think 9 is a good age to introduce a kid to guns. Perhaps not a handgun and certainly not a large caliber.
The first gun I fired may have been a 22 but the one I remember the most was a single shot 12 gauge and I just fired it from the hip and it was a light dove/quail load most likely.
In the late 60's and all through the 70's we had access to an old abandoned dump site and there were 100's of old cars and my Dad, Granddad, uncles and cousins would go there and blast old appliances and cars with anything from 22,every gauge you can think of,30-30,444Marlin,black powder 44,30-06 and everything in betwee and I mast say those bigger slow moving rounds did some serious damage to a Kenmore
My cousin had the first double and triple ought I have ever fired. We turned an old Dodge inside out with that stuff. Pretty nasty hole coming out of a longer barrel.
We literally shot a door and top off an old car using double and triple ought.
Not sure where he got it but he had hundreds of shells of the stuff in an old Army bag. It may have been surplus I don't know. It was just regular 2 3/4" but the shell was half brass and the green plastic just said 00 or 000 This stuff kicked pretty darn hard.
Funny because we were way out in the country and if you were standing in just the right place you would hear the initial "crack" of the gun going off then hear a huge thud of all those lead balls rocking the side of an old Plymouth.
You might say my family were pioneers in firearm forensics. We knew was best for a radiator, windshields, doors, tires and what was best for stopping those pesky Whirlpools

Note to Readers: Never shoot a tire still on a rim and with air in it with a 45. I did this once and that 230 gr ball went whizzing by my head and it sounded like a giant bumble bee.
Must have been going end over end.

I find the comments in many cases are more entertaining than the article.
They are simply blind to the facts and it is just blows my mind how they absolutely refuse to see it any other way...oh but "we" are the closed minded troglodytes.

I am an armed crackhead driving through the city looking for a victim to relieve them of some quick cash.
Do I :
A. Go to the ghetto and rob another armed crackhead?
B. Go to an unfamiliar neighborhood and risk a homeowner with 12 gauge?
C. Go to a bus or train station where there are armed guards?
D. Go to a popular liberal owned pastry/coffee shop with a "Gun Free Zone" sign in the window?

Handguns are fine, I dont think 9 was too young to start shooting, I just dont think he should have started me out first thing with a 10lb machine gun

I am an armed thug "gangsta" driving through the city looking for a victim to relieve them of some quick cash.
Do I :
A. Go to the ghetto and rob an unpredictable crackhead who is likely to have less than $3 on them.
B. Go to an unfamiliar neighborhood and risk a homeowner with 12 gauge?
C. Go to a bus or train station where there are armed guards?
D. Attempt to rob another armed wannabee badass "gansta" thug idiot looking to prove something to the world
E. Go to a popular midnight diner/coffee shop/gas station with a "No Weapons Allowed" sign in the window?
Fixed

Dig the stag grips on the Walther, nice lever too.

Still undecided on the 380 or 38.
A friend of hers has the PK380 but I wasn't impressed. If we went Walther it would be the PPK.

I really like the Sig 232-

The Sig P232 is an awesome little gun, I honestly love it more than a PPK, similar dimensions but more reliable, also the one I shot had a better trigger too.
Older ones were marked Sig P230, same gun, just for reference.
