Why do bug bites happen ?

Post by Lucentcrow »

I’ve noticed bug beetle bites in lots of Stiletto horn scales seems to be American knives mainly not so much on European knives, I say this too because I don’t want mine to suffer the same fate ?

Any answers appreciated

There are all sort of dermestids. Ever pull a cotton t shirt out of a drawer, and find holes in it?

What I wonder is not so much how these beetle larva or whatever are getting at all these knives, but why no one seems to have ever actually seen them. The holes in cotton and cardboard come from moths which people have found in closets and pantries but have anyone found any of the things eating horn?

Moths don't eat cloth.
Their larvae might.

Is there any way to detect their presence other than AFTER the damage is done? Often, long periods of time pass in between handling much of the collection. Hate to one day randomly pick a piece up to find this terrible situation. I have no idea how tiny these things are(?).

I’m wondering may weather/climate have something to do with it. It seems mostly southern humid warmer areas of the country have bug issues. I’m in Boston and I have no bug issues. Does anyone in the Northeast have issues with bug bites?
Where in the US are members having bug issues?

They are 1/16 to 1/8 inch long.
I have not had a problem with any of my knives. I'm in the south and some go years between handling. Perhaps I'm lucky.
