What gives it away? It looks to me like the average Chinese Italian-style, and I realize that anyone can (and does) put any stamp on it that will help it sell.Made in China.
But what specifically do you look for when assessing something like the origin of this knife?

I agree with Bill.Bill DeShivs wrote:Made in China.

Made in China for sure....Texture of metal bolsters, nail nick size and style, hole for release and style of tang stamp are the main reasons that you can tell just from a picture alone....

Ya i am no expert and i instantly thought china when i saw the knife.
Cheap scales, poorly fit...bolsters look wrong. Stamp is REALLY poorly done.
Sorry bud hope you didn't pay Italian Prices!

And they aren't really 440 stainless, either.

Whenever I go to the Chinese takeout place (this has happened at several different places), I point to a dish and ask the lady "Is that one sweet?" She says "Oh, YES, real sweet!". Then I say "What about that one; is that one sweet?" "OOOH YEAH (makes stomach rubbing motion) REAALLL SWEET! YUM YUM SWEET!!".the Chinese do stanp whatever they think will help sales
So I point at a third dish and ask if it's sweet. Around this point the lady deduces that I do NOT want something that is sweet. Now she starts saying "No sweet! That one No sweet, No way!!" She then continues to say this about every dish I ask about from that point, including the ones that a few seconds earlier she had told me were "Real yum yum sweet!"
I'm not trying to say other cultures and ethnicities don't do the same kind of thing when money is at stake but the Chinese seem to be especially shameless when it comes to doing it.

I've noticed that many Chinese businesses seem to want nothing to do with you unless you are spending money. If your not sure yet, or have already spent money then they could care less.

I think the worst is the little trinket stores that line the streets of Mexican border towns because they prey on American guilt.
If you look at something but don't buy it, the owner (or more often, his wife) will come out and scream at you about how you, and you alone, are responsible for the eminent starvation of her children.

At which point you laugh at her and say "You bet'cha", just to piss em off.If you look at something but don't buy it, the owner (or more often, his wife) will come out and scream at you about how you, and you alone, are responsible for the eminent starvation of her children.
