Re: Calibro numbers question
The blades on those are 440C steel (an excellent mid-range alloy). When properly heat-treated it can reach a fine 58 HRc. The Calibro is a knife that carries well when out shotgunning.

13" of ROSCO Picklock goodness! That is right out of the 1940's-50's. The horn is beautiful. I would value it right at $400.00. Bill DeShivs is the answer.

Re: I have a SOG Spec Elite II auto coming.
I have the Kershaw Launch 2 and like it a lot. As your links point out, the 440C steel is an excellent alloy. With proper heat treatment an HRc of 60 isn't uncommon. This alloy will hold an edge tenaciously at a price that is quite attractive. I would dearly love to see out brothers "across the pond...

How about a USN Mark 1 Deck Knife in ELMAX?
An expensive option, no doubt, but worth the money as it would rarely require sharpening in the field. This would also make for a knife that would be easily maintained, yet would last a lifetime. Yeah, I know, I am living in a "fool's paradise". It seems that the old 1930's "hunting pattern" used wh...

Re: I have a SOG Spec Elite II auto coming.
I have a auto conversion Queen swing guard (#1L) with a D2 tool steel blade. IT holds an edges extremely well, but putting an edge on it is a day long task at the Spyderco triangle "Sharpmaker". My Buck Impact (Model 898) automatic has a blade of S30V and is so sharp, it can "shave a goat's nutz"! ;...

Re: I have a SOG Spec Elite II auto coming.
I honestly don't think there any better modern autos out there for that price. The AUS-8 steel is a very high quality steel and SOG has an excellent reputation for quality and standing buy their products. Love the 4 inch blade and was surprised to see how thin this bad boy is. Now I am wanting one....

I know that I wrote you about having a SOG TAC just like that one. I love SOG's autos and this new Spec Elite II auto is no exception.
These are good times for "working automatics" aren't they?

Re: I have a SOG Spec Elite II auto coming.
Gravknife: If you go to http://www.bladehq.com you can see a picture of the SOG Spec Elite II. (I wish I knew how to post pictures from my computer, but I don't). The knife arrived this morning, and I couldn't be more pleased. The knife snaps open with enough power to assure you that it's open. (Hol...

Re: Father's Day 2016
Trust me, when you live by yourself, life sometimes drags on. I hope to pick up the pieces and move on in September. As an Old Salt, it pays to follow the old adage "adapt and overcome". Some things you must learn to live with. This is one of them. The twin sons died in 1982, and the last of my "nuc...

I have a SOG Spec Elite II auto coming.
It will arrive this Saturday from Blade HQ. A 4" AUS-8 satin blade, 4.9" handle, and weighing 3.6 ounces, every review I have seen on this knife says that it has "everything you need, nothing you don't". Slim, lightning fast and locks up like a floor safe. This makes it a perfect carry knife. Blade ...

VIking 45: In 45 minutes, I put a vinegar-induced patina on my Butcher and Paring knives. After I re-hone the edges, I can take them into the kitchen with less concern over the "demon red rust".

Watched The Rifleman tonight, the episode "The Boarding House" The bad guy comes to town with his goon and of course Lucas saves the day but this time he didn't use his rifle,he just got brutal with his hands. At one point the knife looks like a 9 incher but when he get's his butt whipped and Lucas ...
