gravknife wrote: Sat Mar 23, 2024 12:05 pm Does the same apply to mother of pearl ?
I have a couple of old victorian and Edwardian fruit knives and it looks like 1 solid piece .
My Grandfather's Hammer Brand desk knife ca.1910 solid, not laminate. It's not stunning, but it has a few nice pearly areas.
Pardon the poor photo.

Re: Abalone How Do They Do It

When I was 17 60 years ago one of my buddies found a set of Colt Woodsman grips of real mother of pearl carved with dragons, the dragons had pearl eyes. The place was a curio shop. Well, he had a Woodsman and he snapped them right up. I'll never forget the way that pistol looked with those grips on....

Re: Abalone How Do They Do It

Billyfish- yes, doublets and triplets. A nice opal triplet would make a beautiful switchblade button; ever done one of those Bill? Abalone scales and an Opal button, maybe the button would be just a bit oversize; not too large though, yep. :D Jules, those abalone sheets are pretty impressive lookin...

Re: Abalone How Do They Do It

I don't think I've ever seen artificial abalone, Jules; or maybe I have and wasn't aware of it being so.
There have been so many advances in acrylic/plastic materials lately.

Thank you, Bill.
They do a very similar treatment with some opals.

Abalone How Do They Do It

Abalone shell approximately eight by six inches. I see lots of stuff called mosaic abalone and you can see the joints in the surface sometimes if you look carefully. Abalone is delicate in thin layers. What is the process of making solid and mosaic types?

Re: Rough pin on Latama

Rouge and Tripoli are both polishing compounds. I used to work with silver way back in the day. Tripoli is a bit coarser. Rouge is the compound used for fine polishing which is, I think the one you will need; those pins are pretty soft being brass or bronze. If you have a good hardware store at hand...

Re: Rough pin on Latama

Dremels have buffing wheel accessories, felt, cloth; you name it. buy some rouge and tripoli, mask off the surrounding horn and go to it. Take your time and don't bear down too hard. Easy does it. :)

Re: The "Payback."

I have found some very nice, well made knives that are made in China. I'm thinking about ordering them in quantity, laser marking them "PAYBACK by Bill DeShivs"- and selling them. What do you guys think? Not only would I be appropriating their design, but they would be manufacturing them for me! Th...

Re: Michele Fraraccio of Frosolone

Okay, the large one arrived today. The backspring is very strong to the point that I wouldn't be concerned about its closing during the heaviest work. The big boy weighs in at 6.6 onnces. The horn is nice, and the pins are steel. For a handmade Italian folder I would rate it at a 8 out of 10. The bl...

I think an important feature of this korambit knife is missing one important feature; the finger ring at the end of the grip material.

I think you'll all recognize this guy.
